Tennessee DOT Officials to Tour
Arizona Asphalt-Rubber Projects

Tennessee's Highway Commissioner J. Bruce Saltsman; Director of Operations Dennis Cook and Assistant Director Gary Head will tour a number of Arizona Department of Transportation Asphalt-Rubber projects on July 27 and 28. Larry Bonine, ADOT Director, said the tour is being arranged in cooperation with RPA, which conducted a one day seminar for TDOT in March. The Tennessee delegation will also visit northern Arizona to view a 7 1 /2 year old A-R project on the I-40 which was an alternative to reconstruction of the severely distressed concrete pavement. The project consisted of cracking and seating the existing pavement, application of a 3" AC leveling course, a 2" A-R Hot Mix and a 1/2" A-R friction course. This design strategy saved the state millions over the estimated reconstruction of the pavement. A detailed report on this project will be appearing in a future issue of this newsletter.
