FHWA releases interim report on pooled fund study

The FHWA State Planning and Research program, SP&R (2) 166, has released the pooled fund study interim report, Construction Guidelines for Crumb Rubber Modified Hot Mix Asphalt. The report is part of the FHWA/ State research program: Evaluation of Crumb Rubber Modffiers in Asphalt Pavements.
Thirty four states are participating in the study. The authors are: Doug Hansen (NCAT), Auburn University; Jon Epps, University of Nevada at Reno; and R. G. Hicks, Oregon State University.
The report is written in response to the increased interest in the use of CRM HMA in recent years. It presents the current technology for the construction of CRM HMA pavements.
The report concludes:

  • CRM HMA pavements can be successfully constructed.
  • The viscosity of the asphalt-rubber binders needs to be closely monitored.
  • Proper HMA volumetric concepts need to be followed.

The recommendations made in the interim report are:

  • There is a need to standardize the terminology with regard to the gradation of crumb rubber.
  • There is a need to determine the proper testing frequencies for monitoring the physical properties of asphalt- rubber.
  • The construction of CRM HMA pavements should be monitored and the new advances included in the final report.

Copies can be obtained from the RPA office or Ramon Bonaquist at FHWA at (703) 285-2629.

RPA to cosponsor workshops

RPA will cosponsor two California workshops on the promotion of paving materials and products containing crumb rubber with the Business Services Bureau of California State University at Sacramento.
The programs are made possible by a $40,000 grant from the California Integrated Waste Management Board.
According to Susan Gonzales, associate director of the Business Services Bureau, the workshops will be held in two locations.
The northern California program will be held at the Monterey Beach Hotel on May 23. The southern California program will be held at the Sheraton Hotel in Anaheim on May 30.
