RPA member companies, Advanced Recycling Sciences (ARS), Inc and Consulpav International, are partner-ing to assist the state government in Mecklenburg-Vor pommern, (MVP) in initiating a program to cover three (3) roads with more than 11 kilometers
of Asphalt-Rubber during July/August, 2002. Keith Fryer, President and COO of ARS writes:

"We are delighted with the progress we have made and the assistance we have received from the Rubber Pavements Association. We are very excited about the future prospects of Asphalt-Rubber in Germany."

According to Fryer, ARS is coordinating closely with the state govern-ment representatives, along with a state appointed Asphalt-Labor (Arno J. Hinrichsen GmbH & Co.) material-testing laboratory, based near Hamburg and headed by Prof.-Dr.-Ing Klaus-Werner Damm.

(Ed. Note. Dr. Klaus Werner Damm was one of the several German representatives on an RPA sponsored tour of ADOT Asphalt-Rubber projects.)

Fryer also said the MVP state govern-ment has approved carrying out several Asphalt-Rubber test sections on various roads near Schwerin, the state capital and each of the three selected roads will include a series of gap, dense and open graded hot mixes. Professor Damm and his team will be evaluating test sections for surface durability, recyclability, noise reduction and skid resistance.

Dr. Jorge Sousa, RPA Secretary and Principal in Consulpav Intl. and Recipav of Portugal will provide the mix designs and construction consult-ing services to the project as well as the use of Recipav's state-of-the-art blending equipment manufactured by RPA member HotMix Industries of Texas.

 Alberta, Canada

In a relationship that formed at AR 2000 in Portugal, the Tire Recycling Management Association (TRMA), RPA, and International Surfacing Systems have teamed up to construct three Asphalt-Rubber projects in Alberta, Canada this summer. Early in 2001, EBA Engineering Consultants, Ltd. of Edmonton, Alberta and Allan Kwan, Executive Director, Alberta Transportation initiated contact with the Arizona Department of Transportation to discuss technical issues concerning the use of Asphalt-Rubber in cold climates. In April 2002, Doug Wright, Executive Director of the TRMA, led a delegation consisting of Al Schulz, Chair of the TRMA Asphalt Steering Committee; Bert Pulles, EBA Consultants; Jim Kallal, TRMA Board Member; Alan Kwan, Alberta Transportation; Perry Nishiyama, Park Paving; Hugh Donovan, City of Edmonton; Ross Etches, Strathcona County and Mel Portigal, City of Calgary to Arizona for a meeting with ADOT and project tour hosted by RPA.

The tour included a visit to International Surfacing Systems, which is contracting with TMRA to supply equipment and construction consulting for the three Canadian projects; Arizona State University, Department of Civil Engineering for a briefing on the ongoing Asphalt-Rubber research by Drs. Matt Witczak and Kamil Kaloush and a visit to the I-40 SHRP test sections near Flagstaff in northern Arizona where the climate is similar to Alberta.

Mike Domino, Vice President and General Manager of International Surfacing Systems, said the mix designs for the projects were done by RPA
Associate Member, Law Engineering in Phoenix, and Arizona State University will conduct a performance evaluation of the Asphalt-Rubber mixes used in the Alberta projects. The three projects are located in the Cities of Calgary and Edmonton, and Strathcona County.
