Sacramento Bike Trail Cited for Innovative Use of Asphalt-Rubber

Sacramento County has been cited for its innovative use of Asphalt-Rubber in the repaving of the American River Parkway bike trail. More than 11,000 tons of Asphalt-Rubber hot mix pavement was applied to the trail last fall, the first time this type of increasingly popular highway pave-ment
was used for such a recreational project. By adding crumb rubber from old tires to the asphalt binder, the pavement becomes smoother and quieter while remaining flexible enough to keep moisture from seeping through to under-mine it.

On May 7, the Sacramento Department of Parks, Recreation & Open Space was recognized as a pioneer in such off-road use of the material by the Rubber Pavements Association (RPA).

"The advantages of Asphalt-Rubber on the high-way are now being seen and applied to many other types of paving projects," said Jeffrey Reed, RPA president. "The more this material is used, the more savings can be achieved through its greater durability as well as its use of more scrap tires."

The bike trail is used by more than a half-million people each year. Tiechert Construction was the prime contractor. Arizona-based FNF Construction served as blender of the Asphalt-Rubber binder
