Technology Centers "Paving" the Way

In the past four years several centers have been established to promote the use of crumb rubber from scrap tires in asphalt paving materials or other recycled materials in civil engineering applications. The latest center, Asphalt Rubber Technology Service, was recently started at Clemson University in South Carolina.

The Clemson facility, headed by Dr. Serjei Amirkhanian, joins the two Rubberized Asphalt Concrete Technology Centers in California that were created and funded by the California Integrated Waste Management Board. One center is located in Sacramento County DPW, headed by Theron Roschen, Sr. Civil Engineer and the other is managed by the County of Los Angeles DPW under the leadership of Lynn Nicholson.

In the Northeast, the University of New Hampshire's Recycled Materials Resource Center, a partnership with the FHWA is making great progress in conducting research and increasing the awareness of the feasibility of using recycled materials in transportation applications. The New Hampshire center is directed by Dr. Taylor Eighmy.

RPA is working in close cooperation with all the centers in providing historical and current research materials on the successful applications of Asphalt-Rubber paving materials and its benefits. All the centers have websites which are listed below. In addition to sharing research and information, RPA has conducted six workshops for the California centers and for the State of South Carolina Department of Health and Environment which along with Clemson University and the City of Clemson, founded the Asphalt Rubber Technology Service.

ETRA leads the way

RPA had the pleasure of co-sponsoring with the European Tyre Recycling Association (ETRA) headed by the very capable Dr. Valerie Schulman. ETRA is the only European organization devoted exclusively to tyre and rubber recycling. RPA and ETRA formed a relationship in 1998 to further the market development for scrap tire rubber in asphalt pavements in the EU nations. Through Valerie's leadership, ETRA has sponsored panels on rubber modified asphalt during their annual conference in Brussels for the past two years. The presentations have sparked a tremendous interest in the technology. RPA salutes ETRA for their great participation in the AR 2000 conference in having members from fourteen different countries in attendance. RPA is pleased to have ETRA as a global partner.
